Gone With the Wind at Cypress Gardens – Original 1940s Postcard – Framed

Before Florida became known for towering theme-park castles and roller coasters, there was Cypress Gardens — a world of flower-lined waterways, towering cypress trees, and carefully staged scenes created to give visitors a glimpse of an almost dreamlike Florida.

This original linen-era postcard, titled “Gone With the Wind at Cypress Gardens,” captures two costumed women posing beside one of the garden's waterways beneath sweeping trees and colorful flowers.

The title immediately brings to mind the romantic imagery of Gone With the Wind, but this is not a scene from the movie. The postcard itself describes the women as Cypress Gardens “camera models,” dressed in colorful antebellum-style costumes and ready to pose for visitors among the azaleas, gardenias, and camellias.

That presentation became part of the personality of Cypress Gardens. Founded in Winter Haven, Florida, in 1936 by Dick and Julie Pope, Cypress Gardens grew into one of Florida's most famous early roadside attractions and was described by the State Archives of Florida as the state's first theme park. By the 1950s, it had become one of Florida's largest roadside tourist destinations.

The postcard is a C.T. Art-Colortone card, a process associated with Curt Teich & Company of Chicago. According to the Newberry Library's Curt Teich postcard dating guide, Art-Colortone cards used a five-color process on linen-finish stock, often beginning with a black-and-white photograph and transforming it into the richly colored images now so closely associated with the classic linen-postcard era.

A documented copy of this same postcard is known with a 1944 postmark, strongly supporting a 1940s date for the design, although the exact printing year of this particular card cannot be confirmed from the visible portion of the reverse.

More than eighty years later, the colors, sweeping Spanish moss, elaborate dresses, and almost theatrical setting still capture exactly what vintage travel postcards were meant to do: sell a little bit of the dream. Visitors could take home a picture of a Florida that seemed colorful, elegant, and far removed from everyday life.

This is the original vintage postcard, not a reproduction, framed by Tang's Frames in a warm gold frame that complements its vivid linen-era colors.

A small piece of Florida tourism history — and a wonderful reminder of the days when a postcard could turn a roadside attraction into a world of its own, and can now be yours.
