Surfing in Hawaii – Vintage Waikiki Postcard, Mailed 1974

A little piece of Hawaiian vacation history—with a story still written on the back.

This original vintage postcard captures the classic surfing culture of Waikiki. The reverse identifies the scene as “Sport of Kings – surfing at the beach of Waikiki.”

The postcard was actually mailed in 1974 and still carries its handwritten blue-ink message, mailing address, postal cancellation, and red 11¢ U.S. Air Mail stamp. The note is dated 4/17/74, begins “Dear folks,” and includes the wonderfully candid vacation observation about not minding “getting fat & wet,” followed by “Food & rain all the time.” It was mailed to an address in Indiana, Pennsylvania.

Those handwritten details, postal markings, and signs of age are part of what make this piece special. This isn't simply a reproduction of an old Hawaiian scene—it is a postcard that actually traveled home from Hawaii more than 50 years ago.

The postcard is displayed in a substantial silver-tone frame with a softly brushed metallic finish. The wide frame has raised beaded detailing around both the outer edge and the inner opening, along with clean mitered corners that give it a slightly ornate, vintage-inspired appearance.

The cool silver finish works especially well with the blues of the Hawaiian surf scene while still keeping the postcard itself as the focus.

Details: Original vintage mailed postcard; handwritten and dated April 17, 1974; 11¢ U.S. Air Mail stamp; silver-tone brushed frame with decorative beaded trim; approximate outside frame dimensions 5½" × 7"; approximate visible opening 3" × 4½".

Vintage postcards may show handwriting, postal markings, toning, and light wear consistent with their age and history.

One original available. Once it's gone, this exact piece—and its story—is gone with it.
